A Day in the Life: Manager, Risk Management Department
My typical day at work as a member of Discover’s Risk Management Department starts
quite early: the reports on the state of our portfolio have to be ready before the
management meeting in the morning. My teammates and I look at how delinquencies
and losses are shaping up for a current month, compare the estimates to our latest
forecasts and notify our partners in Collections if there are any surprises. A ten-minute
report to the senior management team, and we are free to get our coffee, catch up
on the latest economic news and plan our day.
My team is responsible for keeping management informed of the latest trends in cost
items on the company’s P&L. Any change in the factors that affect our metrics has
to be promptly dissected, analyzed, quantified and presented so that necessary actions
can be taken promptly.
We are very proud to be doing forecasting: while sophisticated models guide our
estimates, intuition and common sense are equally important in ultimately defining
our predictions, and it is exposure to everyday decision-making by Discover’s leadership
team that gives us the best opportunity to develop this intuition, obtain the knowledge
on inner workings of the business and see how we can affect the company’s performance.
Due to the high profile nature of our work, we participate in shaping our company’s
strategic plan, formulating answers to regulatory agencies’ questions, preparing
presentations to the Board of Directors and setting investor expectations. My typical
day flies by in a flash - who said that working in analytics has to be boring?

A Day in the Life: Associate, Business Technology
A typical day for a BT Associate starts much like any other FT employee’s day: with
Intranet and email. I go to Discover Today to grab the latest headlines, check the
stock price, and learn about upcoming events on campus. Next, it’s onto email to
review my schedule for the day and catch up on discussions related to my projects.
There are clearly different experiences and day-to-day tasks depending on the department
you join. In Application Development, a typical day involves attending code review
sessions and meeting continuously with Business Partners to review the latest changes
to enterprise-wide projects. In Infrastructure or Enterprise Computing Services,
a typical day involves dealing with implementing server enhancements, troubleshooting
network outages and testing the latest hardware to be rolled out to the rest of
the company.
It’s not all work and meetings, however. You’ll find that the connections you make
grow and develop beyond simple work colleagues to real friendships. Take advantage
of these relationships and cultivate them by coordinating group lunches, planning
after-work events, or simply strolling down to the “grab-and-go” cafe with a friend
to relax and talk casually about the latest happenings in your life.
We each have the unique opportunity to lay the groundwork for what will hopefully

A Day in the Life: Vendor Liaison, Cardmember Assistance
I have been with Discover Financial Services for 4 ½ years and have moved quickly
through the levels of our Cardmember Assistance Department, from a Senior Collection
Representative to the highest level collector, Senior Collection Specialist. Currently,
I work in the National Recovery Center (NRC). The function of NRC is to collect
on delinquent accounts. Specifically, I am a Vendor Liaison in the Agency department
that is responsible for all vendor relations. Our vendors assist Discover in collaborating
with Cardmembers to work out viable plans to collect what they owe on their accounts.
My responsibility is to maintain a professional relationship between six vendors
and service their needs from complaint resolution to processing “not sufficient
funds” claims, probate issues, and bankruptcy needs. In addition, I maintain 50
state licensures for all of my agencies and assist in keeping them certified.
Every day is different and exciting for me, due to the many different responsibilities
I have, and the commitment from my manager to make our team successful. My journey
to this point has been rewarding and well worth my time and dedication to Discover
Financial Services. I enjoy working here and I hope you will have the opportunity

A Day in the Life: Project Manager, Finance Strategy & Analysis
I work with Strategy and Analysis team in Finance, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions
and strategic planning. This role gives me a good perspective on the overall business
strategy, long-term and short-term goals of the company and an insight into the
various functions within Discover.
I get to my desk anywhere between 7:35 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. and try to catch a quick
work out before getting started. After my daily coffee and breakfast from the convenient
“grab-n-go,” my day at work begins. Discover’s campus is beautiful, with a two mile
running track, a fully-equipped gym, “grab-n-go” stores, laundry service, cafeteria
and an in-house drug-store. These facilities available on campus represent the firm’s
commitment towards encouraging a work-life balance.
Once at my desk, my typical day involves conducting valuations, financial analysis,
meetings and follow-ups. At Discover, there is a lot of emphasis on keeping employees
challenged with new and interesting projects. Further, Discover has a very open
culture and it really helps one connect to others, adding to the experience tremendously.
I have been most impressed by the quality and diversity of people I get to work
with. Each day teaches me something new, as a result of working with exceptional
people, who are good team players and have a great work ethic.
